In March 2003 the United States took action in a controversial decision to declare war on Iraq. Despite the overthrow of the dictatorship and the lack of finding weapons of mass destruction, troops still remain in Iraq. When weighing the postivites and negatives of war, has going to war in Iraq had a postitive overall global effect? Has the war really helped the fight against global terror?

Despite terrorism still thriving, there has been progress in the effort to stop global terror.
The situation in Iraq is critical and worsening. Violence in Iraq is increasing in scale resulting in destruction and death. Sectarian conflict, insurgencies, militias, and death squads, make it virtually impossible for United State’s and Iraqi forces to bring stability to the country. Although the Iraqi government was democratically elected, ethnic differences prevent national reconciliation. Finally corruption and sectarian differences in opinion surrounding Iraq’s oil supply prevents economic growth from spurring. Ultimately Iraq’s instability regarding security, politics, and economics call for a new approach in order for United States forces to accomplish its mission.
I feel that when weighing the positive and negatives of war that going to war in Iraq has had an overall predominantly negative impact. In Iraq, though the dictatorship has been removed, the newly implemented democracy has not performed as hoped. It has created conflict and a power struggle between the different cultural groups within the nation. Here in the U.S. the war in Iraq has been connected with many negative connotations, as seemingly unending violence continues to take more and more American lives.
Though I have never really supported the war, I disagree with it more and more every day. Though some strides have been made, such as the overthrow of Saddam, the negatives far outweigh the positives. 2007 was the deadliest year since the invasion and there seems to be no end in sight. The truth is, the troops will be there long after President Bush leaves office. The next President will be forced to make tough decisions when dealing with the war. Much of the nation is against the war and it is losing more support every year.
Unlike Tom, I feel that going to war in Iraq has had a positive effect on the ongoing war against terrorism. The United States had to stand up for its self when attacked on 911. If not I feel that we would be showing the rest of the world that we are not willing to protect our nation being the weaker country. More than 180 nations have offered and provided assistance in the war on terrorism. Some 69 countries are contributing direct support to Operation Enduring Freedom.
I also agree that the U.S. involvement in Iraq has been negative choice overall. No matter how many terrorists the U.S. captures there, the ideal the follow still calls more extremists to action. It seems to me that the U.S. involvement itself is creating bitter blood that is causing these extremists to want to drive them out. Considering secular disenssion as well, the violence will probably never stop until peaceful, cooperative efforts are made to bring the different secular groups to a compromise that is acceptable to all.
I think that the war on iraq is a good thing as the iraqis shouldnt of started the war, through attacking through the 911 attack which was a major start to terroism and has led towards the other attacks such as the london bombings. So too sum up I think that the war on iraq should carry on and the U.S and the U.K will show terrorists that they should just live peacefully.
i believe that the situation of the Iraq war is a complete waste of time and resources. i believe that certain world leaders should take decisive action and stop fannying around with the idea that everything will sort itself out, because with all due respect, it isn’t.
I think that the war on Iraq is completely pointless. George Bush has only started this war for maximum profit on his family oil companies. He had proper information on this matter and has rushed the decision to start the war. Many innocent people have died from this war and it is all to do with George Bush. The stereotypical view of Iraqis being terrorist must be stopped now it is bang out of order.

As the war with Iraq got underway, the American public rallied behind George W. Bush. On March 20th, the day immediately after the U.S. military’s first attack on Iraq, 67% approved of the job Bush was doing as President; just a week earlier, his job approval had been 58%.
Following the fall of Baghdad, 73% of Americans approved of Bush’s overall job performance – his war-time high.
Yet from that point forward, with increasing coalition casualties and Americans voicing concern about the economy back home, the President’s overall job approval rating started to decline. By August, 55% of Americans approved of his job performance, and currently 51% approve. This is up slightly from 47% last month — the lowest approval rating of his presidency.
i think that the war could have been prevented and people are dying for no reason america shouldn’t have got involved, they should have left iraq to solve the problem by themselves. Its all a big waste of time, money and lives!
I think the war in Iraq has become ridiculous and bigger than it actually is. USA had no right to just barge into the eastern country and change all their views and policies. So many soldiers, US and UK, have been killed in violent meaningless bombings. If the people of Iraq wanted help in sorting out their country they would have appealed for help.
Most of the general public if you carried out a survey would not be able to tell you how this all started because it has been so long.
USA is a big enough country to fight for themselves but i don’t see why they brought the UK to the decision to declare war against Iraq.
I think we should pull the troops out, and prevent anymore terrible deaths from occurring.
We are fighting a war that can not be won.
I think that this situation is very hypocritical. Do we honestly believe that if this situation was flipped around that the USA would do nothing to remove the foreign troops from their country? And yet we expect the Iraqi citizens to just accept the troops and leave them alone. As bad as the war has become we should have left them to it unless they asked for our help.
To put it simply we are fighting a war that cannot be won. The US is out there because they are trying to get oil. But they can easily cover it up with the peace act. I also think that the US are bad allies to have. They think that they are better than us, and try to use us as pawns on a chess board. I think its time that Great Britain detaches its self from Americas chess board and fights its own fight.
I think that going to war with Iraq wasn’t the proper retaliation for 9/11. By America and UK going to war showed Iraq and the East in general that we to are brutish nations which is reinforcing there stereotypes of the two nations, fuelling there hatred and doing nothing more than furthering terrorism. What we need to do is to show them that what they perceive about us as is in fact incorrect.
We should have left Saddam Hussien in charge none of this would ever have happened.
Forget the USA for a second and remember who really gets the job done, Britain.
Britain should not be in Iraq or Afghanistan as are armed forces are already stretched else where not to mention how small they are compared to the likes of the USA. Although our forces are renowned for being the best trained in the world, if our goverment wants to keep fighting these wars then it needs to back the forces with more money, personel and better quality eqipment. I would also like to say that these wars cant be won. We aren’t fighting conventional armies we are fighting men women and children who are dying because some cleric calls it Gods will. Please realise i have nothing against Islam or any Arab countries or people, accept exstremists (terrorists).
I feel that at this moment in time extremist actions will continue to occur in Iraq and all over the wrold. Therefore before the war in iraq ends more destruction and death will definatlely happen, until more peaceful efforts are made to bring new governments into power. However sometimes the right thing to do is to fight back and the sooner terrorist dictatorship is wiped out the sooner people can get on with their lives, with the comfort of knowing that they can go out into their own towns/villages without a car bomb going off on the side of a road.
The US occupation in Iraq is entirely unjustified. It is propossed to us that it is a just war that is in existence for the protection of the Iraqi people however this is simply not the case. The citizens of the western world have been led to believe that it is a valid fight for justice, these misleadings have been portrayed to us through mediums such as the media and increasingly corrupt governments. The only way for people to truely believe that the war in Iraq is justified is to go to the war zones themselves and experience the poverty and devistation first hand, only once this experience has occured can people be sure to have a clear answer to the question of whether or not mass murder for oil, under the guise of a justified war, is truely just or not.
A final note, although i may not agree with the war itself i do truely believe the troops who are serving over in Iraq are doing their upmost to provide support where possible in an increasingly difficult situation forced upon them by our governments.
People can say that they were against the war in Iraq, but I believe to say the war shouldn’t have occurred is in my opinion to be truly ignorant. No person with any degree of morality would stand by and watch people be slaughtered, let alone millions in the case of Iraq. Millions were slaughtered under Saddams Reign many in cruel systematic experiments with chemical and biological weapons. T.ugh these weapons have not been found, to deny their existance is again to be ignorant. As for the question of the U.S. going to war for oil, this is ridiculous and for those with little concept of economics. if they “oil barons” really wanted to make money they would want less oil on the market to up their prices, flooding the market would just lower prices. Simple economics. Any oil that does go on the market is paid for, some beleive it is stolen and America seems to be an oil thirsty thief, but this is wrong. To allow the evil ctators to continue and the threat of terrorism to overwhelm us is wrong. Intimes of need we have to unite rather divide over these matters.
At the being of the war, I supported Bush’s decision to go to Iraq and fight terrorism. I thought he had a logical reason. Bin Laden and Hussein were both evil and needed to be stopped, but the U.S. has taken it a step too far. By keeping the soldiers in Iraq, we’re causing more and more violence. We need to pull out and let the Iraqi people recover from losing their leader. The Iraqi people need to become independent and set up their own form of government. They can’t do that when the U.S. and its soldiers are in the way. Bush has a done a terrible job in handling the war in Iraq.
War is part of a capitalist society people should get used to it!
The iraq’s didnt start the war on terror, it was the terrorist organisation al’ quida, that was for all the people who keep putting that and if the people of iraq did want freedom under saddam’s rule it was almost impossable to say so to the UN, USA or NATO because they lived under a DICTATORSHIP which means that if they spoke out they would have been shot or gased like the thousands of Kurds that he murdered.
I believe that the war in iraq should never have started. I think that terrorism is a ridiculous thing. I believe that as a nation we should respect everyone and not discriminate against others who we think are different from us. I wish that the war was over and that everyone was happy. People should be fighting for more important thing like poverty, world hunger, and many more things. Those are all things worth fighting for. If everyone respected each other our nation would be much different. There would be no fighting or violence. I hope that the war is over soon!
